More information about us
We are a non-profit making information centre based in Ely, with a special interest in providing the reader with simple, up-to- date plain language facts and news about cancer. So understanding the treatments that are available and advice that is given, is made easy.
With a focus on empowerment we believe even though there are thousands of sites out there for any one who has an interest in finding information, there is still room for improvement.
Although we are not a support group as such, we do organise interesting and useful talks on cancer prevention. And we are in contact with other concerns that have an interest in providing cancer prevention information.
We hope you will find the information you need without having to fully understand every aspect of cancer, its causes and its treatments. This isn’t intended to be a light hearted approach but one that can be taken as it’s needed. We appreciate everyone needs things at different times in their lives, whether it be information or treatment and our useful ‘links’ hopefully will provide the reader with more options if required.
We neither reject nor accept alternative or conventional medicine, but hope to provide the reader with enough information so as to make up their own minds. However, where possible the use of natural, less invasive interventions is thought without doubt something that we feel needs investigating.
Our vision therefore is simple; to help change the focus in healthcare from the current emphasis on disease management to that of active prevention through the appreciation of a positive healthy lifestyle and provide you with the information you need to make informed decisions.
We are a small family and friends group, who have a keen interest in health, and the potential for a healthier lifestyle. Based in Ely and expanding all the time it is our great wish to share information and raise awareness in all health matters, but especially those relating to cancer.
Bob or Robert Mahler was a good man who left this world on April 12 1996. On his death certificate it reads due to carcinoma, cancer to you and me.
He was the father of 6 children and the husband of a wife of nearly 40 years and he is missed each and every day.
After being diagnosed with prostrate cancer he was told he only had a few months to live.
As this was a determined man, he made it another 2 years. However the first year was extremely bad for him as the sheer frustration of being diagnosed with something ‘that only other people get’ (not his words, but certainly our feelings at the time) was an awful lot to bear, and especially in someone relatively young and fit.
Then the first part of the last year was spent searching for information and self-help practices. The second part of the last year was even worse as he had to endure a great deal of pain.
I’m not saying it was all completely bad, there were inspiring and truthful times mixed up in those 2 years, but the most annoying thing in all of it was the feeling of helplessness, for the person involved, and the people watching a loved one die. At that time there really was not the information there is available today.
He was not a professional medical man, but one that enjoyed a healthy lifestyle, good food, keeping fit and researching health issues.
That’s why we have named this organisation after our dad, Bob Mahler, the man who had time for everyone and anyone, who believed in the philosophy of empowerment. And I’m sure if he were still here he would have loved this information site, one that, hopefully will serve its community well.
